The imposing 25,000 seat Roman-era amphitheater highlights the archeological remains of ancient Ephesus. Built into the mountainside, the theater's early roots date back to the 1st century BCE. Preparatory excavation into the mountainside for the theaters construction took an estimated 60 years. The center of entertainment for the influential ancient port city, the theater is connected in the New Testament (Acts 19:23-41) with rioting silversmith's against the Apostle Paul and his preaching. The 25,000 seat amphitheater, once completed in the Roman era, stood 30 meters tall (100 ft) and offered a commanding view of the countryside from the upper rows. Today, significant amounts of marble facing, as well as many of the behind stage sounding columns remain.
