Thanks Uuganbayar! What an honor to receive your comment! I have not been to Mongolia but I lived with Tibetans for many years, and also met many people from Kalmykia and Buriat. This textile portrait was based on a photo taken by a friend of mine who DID visit Mongolia. He loved it, and I loved his stories and these wonderful people's faces. The clothing is very similar to the Ladakhis' I've been in Ladakh many times too. Much culture is shared across these regions. But I'm sure there are many differences too, as each region had it's own experiences, its own history. Thank you for your compliments. Please share my work with others who might enjoy it. All the best, Leslie

Yes, as you say, Kimberly. This is ancient technique applied to modern imagery and incorporating new materials. I'm glad the dual nature came across. It's what I feel as a contemporary western person working in a traditional sacred art.

Love your technique! What may be old seems new again - or this an original way to intertwine many techniques. Which ever - there seems to be a modern/ ancient dual feel to your work.

Thanks, Mike and Carol! How nice to find your comments today. I also sometimes feel I can hear the conversation these three are having. They've become good friends of mine. Carol, I read your bio and strongly agree with your perspective that "art should uplift, inspire, educate and challenge the viewer’s mind, heart and soul."

A beautiful work of art. I love the way you have defined the nuance of each personality by their facial expressions. I can almost imagine what they are saying. Congratulations!

Very pleased with the image, color, printing . My selection of printing onto wood is great for this image. There are a few mildly dark lines which are natural to wood. They show through the image and contribute to the image--glad that none of these was over the face of the horse rider.

Perfect! I wish that you'd included a translation of the two inscriptions in some ancient language that are above the shoulders of St John Coltrane. It would cost your company virtually nothing to supply this with the picture.

Artist's Description

Nontraditional piece based on a photograph of three Mongolians conversing. Hand-stitched with the same traditional techniques used for the sacred images, this piece features contrasting fabrics and the application of real mala beads. The finished work is stretched on a rigid wooden frame rather than rolling up like a thangka.

I've applied traditional Tibetan techniques of patchwork, applique, and embroidery to new imagery in this piece. When I look at this image, I want to join the conversation these three delightful characters are engaged in... though the small woman in the middle looks like she's heard the bald man's story one too many times!
