Polarized light photomicrograph of a thin section of Tiger's Eye. Sample kindly provided by Stefano Avesani. Tiger's eye is a gemstones made of quartz fibers intergrown with tiny needles of another mineral called crocidolite. Such intimate intergrowth provides the gemstone not only the color but also the effect called chatoyance or "cat's effect".
"There was a penetration of the light into solid substance so that I seemed to see into things, deep in...".
