Description
Out in the western country, far from the noise and parking lots, a working cowboy takes time out to listen to the silence and think.
This particular cowboy is a horse whisperer, a man who spends time observing, interacting with, teaching, training, and just being with his horses. He knows the crucial importance of time, and taking it. He knows that meaningful relationships – whether it is with the horses he trains or the people around him – are not quick things. Meaningful relationships take concerted time, the ability to listen, and – when one decides to speak – doing so after great thought.
The artwork, Time Out, invites the viewer to step into the world of our cowboy horse whisperer, to sit, like him, atop his mount and look out into the landscape. He is relaxed yet alert, his eyes moving across the landscape and taking it all in.
There is no hurry to be anyplace; indeed, this day is for a ride through the landscape, cowboy and mount learning to work with one another, to communicate, to strengthen their relationship and to deepen their understanding with one another.
How odd that we try to hurry this! And how unsurprising that, when we do, we do not succeed in our aim. Such is the result of the many self-help books, the ones that promise readers to influence others and make friends. Friends indeed – these are acquaintances, business contacts, people we are taught to manipulate, not people we interact with meaningfully.
Our working horse whisperer is well acquainted with these false teachings, since many of the horses he works with are owned by people trying to take short cuts, and not understanding whey they and their horses do not get along, do not understand one another.
It all comes back to time, and being willing to take enough of it.
