A hummingbird is taking a shower in a fountain in California.
Photographing hummingbirds is quite a challenge due to their flight speed and healthy attitude. Therefore, people at art shows often ask me how I managed to capture the birds in my hummingbird shower series. The answer is patience! A couple summers ago, I noticed how one bird came to my backyard fountain once or twice a day to take a shower. I watched this activity for some days and then decided to try and capture it. It took about 6 weeks of trial and error to get this moment when the bird was there at a time of the day when the light was right and both the equipment and photographer were ready. I decided not to use a flash but try it with natural light and a speed high enough to freeze the water stream to droplets. Not using artificial or controlled light created extra challenges but I am pleased with the final result.

Hi Katja...This is just wonderful!! I, too, live in CA & spend hours & hours in my back yard waiting for the perfect hummer shot!! It has got to be one of the biggest challenges a photographer can face!! They are so fast...sometimes flying in & out of the light! This is an awesome capture & one you much have been so excited to get!! I know I would be! Definitely an f/v from me!!!!!
