The sun is just coming up over the white pillow rock on the floor found in parts of Death Valley creating a wonderful contrast between land and sky. Death Valley National Park is an environment of contrasts. Here I have focused on these unusual cracked features rather than the dunes themselves or the surrounding playas and mountains. These features are delicate although you can step on them as you would a cobblestone street. Through time, and the millions of visitors that come to explore and experience Death Valley, these features will suffer from over-use. The winds of this part of California will erase the footprints in the dune areas but these "cracked pillows" will show the abuse of too many visitors. I made this photograph many years ago on color slide reversal film and a soft edged graduated filter. Last year I revisited the exact spot and reshot the scene in digital. This is the slide version and I am still pleased with my first attempt. Please check-out my Death Valley Gallery on FAA for other beautiful images from the area.
