Description
Toquepala copper mine, as seen from the International Space Station (ISS). This mine is located in the Andes mountains in Tacna Province in southern Peru. It is a steep-sided and stepped open-pit mine. At the surface the mine is 6.5 kilometres across, descending to a depth of more than 3000 metres. An access road (dark line) circles the wall of the pit to reach the bottom. The mine opened in 1960, producing thousands of tons of copper each year. Photographed by an Expedition 7 crew member on 22 September 2003.
