Description
Tragopogon Pratensis or Goats Beard
------
This plant grows naturally in the fields of North Dakota, USA but I brought some of its seeds home to Lithuania and it seems they like my garden as well. Tragopogon pratensis is a ANNUAL/PERENNIAL growing to 0.6 m (2ft). It's favorite places to grow in the wild are Meadows, pastures, dunes, waysides and waste places. I think that's why it grew up about a meter tall in the good garden soil.

These plants are interesting because their blossoms are open only during morning hours, and close before the noon. Also, if not familiar with this wildflower, one would not expect a gorgeous seedhead of the mature plant, when seeing humble yellow blossoms on tall stems of longleafed weed. It is in flower from Jun to July, and the seeds ripen from Aug to September. The flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs) and are pollinated by Bees, flies, self. The plant is self-fertile.
