I spent the afternoon walking along the beaches of Port Canaveral and Cocoa Beach, Florida. I did this with my brother and my sister-in-law. It was a beautiful comfortably warm day. We went from beach to beach and noticed differences in the color of the water and the topography. Some beaches had lots of grass and some had dunes. Clouds came and went. The sun moved through the sky. Some beaches had bigger waves than others. Birds fished in the surf and turtles had nests in the sand near the dunes. Many of the nests were marked off with stakes and string to keep people from raiding them for the eggs.
Some beaches were full of people and others were rather isolated. It was a wonderful way to spend the day visiting with my family. It was a leisurely afternoon chatting amiably and exploring the beaches together. We watched as little sand crabs scurried sideways into tiny little holes.
I painted this the following day. It isn't absolutely based on any one particular scene. I just channeled my memories and this was the result. I wanted to show the the gentle colors and the sense of tranquility. As I painted, I felt the calm and relaxation of our day. I imagined the sound of the gentle surf. I imagined the light beginning to fade as the sun dropped low.
