Florida pine forest in Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge.

Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge is located five miles east of U.S 1 in Titusville, Florida. The Refuge was established in 1963 to provide a buffer zone for NASA in the quest for space Exploration. Approximately one half of the 140,000 acres consists of blackish estuaries and marshes. The reminding land is of coastal dunes, scrub oak, pine forests and flatwoods, and palm and oak hammocks.

The objectives of the Wildlife Refuge are to provide a habitat for migratory birds, protect endangered and threatened species. Over 500 species of wildlife inhabit the Refuge.
