This Tricolored Blackbird looks very similar to it's cousin the Red-wing Blackbird. One difference is the song and the second is the patch of color on the folded wing. The male Tricolored Blackbird has white edgings instead of yellow on the wing. Their song is more nasal and lower tone than the Red-wing. That was just what I heard in the song, but I'm not an expert. The Tricolored Blackbirds diet is mostly insects in the summer and a variety of seeds in the fall and winter months. It can be found in fresh water marshes among the dense stands of cattails of bulrushes. It does most of it's foraging in open habitats, like pastures, lawns and farm fields. Many of the habitats once used by this bird has been lost to agricultural and urban development. In 2006 the Tricolored was classified as endangered.
