Description
Twelve kilometers northwest of Trinidad Cuba is a 7-story high tower, called the Manaca-Iznaga Tower, which gives tourists a spectacular view of the surrounding Valle de los Ingenios (Valley of the Sugar Mills). In centuries past however, the tower was used to observe and c9ontrol the slaves working in the sugar cane fields around the hacienda (or plantation). The Manaca Iznaga Tower is the tallest lookout tower ever built in the Caribbean sugar region. The Valley of the Sugar Mills was declared a UNESCO Cultural Heritage Site thanks to the preservation of 65 archaeological plots. The tower was declared a National Monument in 1978. Over the years, the Manaca-Iznaga Tower has become an architectural and cultural symbol of the most important sugar-producing region in all of Cuba in colonial times.
