These lovely little harbingers of spring grow in colonies in our woods (mixed hardwood) where the sun filters through. It takes a couple years for a plant to get old enough to bloom, so the mottle green and purple leaves far outnumber the flowers. In our locale, Southeastern Pennsylvania, blooming is done by the end of April. Although it is said the corms may be boiled and eaten, beware as they can cause vomiting. I’d let them grow where they are and enjoy them for their lovely flowers and handsome leaves – no eating. They are relatively common where conditions are right. This picture was taken April 24, 2011; the flowers are now gone (April 28th).
