Description
The tugboat Linda Lee Bouchard heads up the East River on a cold winter day. The 124-foot vessel is fitted with a coupler system for nesting its bow in specially-built barges. To her starboard is the Domino Sugar Refinery, in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Although the plant employed more than 4,000 people at its peak in the early 1900s, it is now dormant and enjoys historic landmark status. Operated by Bouchard Transportation Company, the 6,000-horsepower Linda Lee Bouchard slowly pushes aside plates of ice the size of front lawns as it makes its way north toward Hell Gate.
