Turbine hall. Turbine hall at a tidal power station. Turbines convert the flow of water into electricity. They can also be reversed to pump water to increase the level of water held so that more electricity can be made when the tide drops. Tidal power stations are dam-like structures built across the mouths of river estuaries. Water is allowed through sluice gates when the tide is rising but can only escape back to the sea at low tide through the turbines. Photographed at the Rance tidal barrage in France. The barrage's 24 turbines can generate 240 million watts of power from a difference of up to 13.5 metres in the water level between high and low tide.
