Description
"Twin Falls, Idaho, Courthouse" by Catherine Sherman.
The Twin Falls County, Idaho, Courthouse is a beautiful building more than a hundred years old that sits on a large lawn in the city of Twin Falls. The four-story building, dedicated in 1911. Construction began on the building of Bedford stone and brick in 1908 from a design by C. Harvey Smith, who selected a mixture of classical styles. Twin Falls County is in southcentral Idaho. The county seat and largest city is also named Twin Falls. The county and city are named for a split waterfall on the Snake River of the same name. The Snake River is the county's northern boundary.
The courthouse cost $150,000, an astronomical sum at the time, considering no one knew whether the area would grow in population. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ inflation calculator estimates construction would cost $3.4 million today.
The area around Twin Falls was first organized as part of the original Owyhee County in 1864 as part of Idaho Territory. In 1879 it was partitioned away from Owyhee County to form part of Cassia County. In response to local government needs for these new communities, which were as much as 80 miles (130 km) away from Cassia County's seat at Albion, Twin Falls County was created by the Idaho Legislature on February 21, 1907. Work on the courthouse building was started soon afterward.
