Description
Photo © 2019 Susan Wiedmann. This Western Gull mother (Larus occidentalis) looks a bit exasperated as her still-downy triplet chicks are all crying to get her attention. Perhaps she is thinking wistfully about the romantic day with their father when they were conceived just two months earlier.
Those moments were captured in the images “Caught in the Act” and “Afterglow,” which are also in my “Western Gulls” collection:

The family lives behind the iron fence of a marina in Monterey, California. The chicks blend in with the wooden boards of the dock, helping to keep them safe from predators until they lose their down.
Western Gulls breed after they are four years old and populate the West Coast from Washington State to Baja California.
