Two rusty old locks secure the door of this abandoned building in rural South Carolina in this detailed black and white photograph,. The building is a derelict filling station, now shuttered by the owner. When the automobile arrived, filling stations were put up along the country roads. Over time, as the roads fell into disuse in favor of larger highways, these filling stations and country stores were locked up and closed, left to rust in the humid Midlands air. This building probably dates from the 30s. The locks are relatively new, but everything has gone to rust.

This scene immediately caught my eye as I went looking for old buildings in the Midlands of South Carolina. It is an old state, with plenty of old abandoned and sometimes derelict buildings that always offer opportunities for photography. I was interested in photography as a child, and my father had even bought me an enlarger so that I could set up a small darkroom in my bedroom at night. One afternoon in the 5th grade, a large tornado approached Dallas. I rushed home, found my father's 35mm Exacta camera, climbed on the roof, and began taking photos of the tornado. My plan was to develop the film and make prints to sell the next day. Unfortunately, I did not understand any of the settings, and of course the pictures did not come out.
