Description
Tobacco drove the Winston-Salem economy for much of the twentieth century. R. J. Reynolds 1874 arrival in Winston, NC, changed the towns fortunes. Reynolds recognized the strategic location of the North Carolina town--at the center of a new tobacco curing process and on a newly constructed rail line. Reynolds Tobacco Company outpaced competitors, recognizing consumer trends, efficiently adopting modern manufacturing technologies, and leveraging new media formats to make its brands household names. Throughout the twentieth century R. J. Reynolds Company diversified its business portfolio, moving heavily into the food market. The early twentieth century factory section of Winston-Salem is now undergoing a renaissance. Old warehouses and factory buildings are being transitioned to upscale residential and entertainment use.
The vintage R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company smokestack--one of two in downtown Winston-Salem--recalls the city's industrial heritage. This image works well as a single piece of wall art--I recommend canvas, metal, or acrylic prints. Grouped with contrasting images in the "Up In Smoke" collection the pieces take on a modern art feel for a large residential or business space.
