My dad went down over Anzio in early 1943 in the B-17 "Off Limits" while serving with the Armys 8th Air Corps. He spent the duration of the war as a POW...great posting Chris

Chris Lord replied:

Well I am very glad to hear that your dad survived that experience Dave. And happy to hear this image got your memories going! Thanks for a great comment, cheers

Wonderfully colorful aviation art and interesting history!

Chris Lord replied:

The pacifist in me feels a bit bad, that I'm glamorizing war making this old warbird look that good so I'll mention also that 46,500 young men were wounded or killed flying these things for a bit of perspective! I am very glad you liked my picture however, and it was a lot of fun to create! Thanks very much for the great comment, cheers.

I haven't received the cup yet, but will be here any day now. Already, from this beautiful piece of art work, and how it is placed on the cup, it will be a fine addition to my cup collection from around the world. Sandy Keeton, I"m impressed.

Artist's Description

The Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress is a four-engine heavy bomber aircraft developed in the 1930s for the then-United States Army Air Corps (USAAC). Competing against Douglas and Martin for a contract to build 200 bombers, the Boeing entry outperformed both competitors and more than met the Air Corps' expectations. Although Boeing lost the contract because the prototype crashed, the Air Corps was so impressed with Boeing's design that they ordered 13 more B-17s for further evaluation. From its introduction in 1938, the B-17 Flying Fortress evolved through numerous design advances. The B-17 was primarily employed by the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) in the daylight precision strategic bombing campaign of World War II against German industrial and military targets. The United States Eighth Air Force based at Thorpe Abbotts airfield in England and the Fifteenth Air Force based in Italy complemented the RAF Bomber Command's nighttime area bombing in Operation Pointblank to help secure...

About Chris Lord

Chris Lord

My name is Chris Lord and I am the Head Pixie and Pixel Pusher at Pixielated Pixels. I am British born and bred but New York City based and I first picked up a camera almost 50 years ago. After all those years I am finally happy creating the images I always dreamed of. Shooting film and printing in the darkroom never gave me as much pleasure as powerful computers and Adobe's wonderful software. I began working with computers in the mid 1980s, now I have become confident and competent with the tools at hand and feel that the world has finally caught up with my eclectic artistic vision. Intense and powerful color and a somewhat surreal take on reality is the way my mind works and I enjoy producing images to match. "Reality is a somewhat...
