Description
This simple stone church and a charming villa stand at the rear of Varenna's town square along Lake Como, Italy. The small Romanesque Church of St. John the Baptist (San Giovanni Battista) dates back to the 10th and 11th centuries. After being enlarged, it was consecrated in 1151. This is the oldest church in Varenna and one of the oldest in the Lake Como area. The simple stone building is a stark contrast to the overwhelming size and Baroque decoration of so many other Italian Catholic churches. Of special interest to visitors are the frescoes on the interior walls that date back to the 14th century. A picturesque old villa is located next to the little church.
