I thought we were going to a big deal mass at St. Peter’s Basilica. It was just three participants at a side altar. In many ways, it was one of the better excursions as there was little of the usual rush. Early in the morning, there was almost no one in St. Peter’s Basilica. The endless lines of tourists waiting to get through security had yet to extend around the square. There, in fact, was some peace and solitude in the midst of a grand place.
