The woman sleeps; she smoulders. Her heart beats, bleeds, breaks. From the fissure, a flower. Sentience is essential; Surrender is not possible. Venus Rising from the Earth was inspired by a trip to Chile's Atacama Desert with my 20-year-old daughter. While there, we walked among hundreds of geysers as they sprang up from the core of a dormant volcano as the sun rose over the Andes. The jagged black silhouette of the mountains remained in my mind, as did the memory of the powerful forces of the volcano that lay just below our feet. When I came across a photograph of a 1930s painting by Felice Casorati in the classical style, I knew I had found an image I could transform into the embodiment of this experience. The long-dormant power of this woman, garbed in the brilliant red of a Renaissance cardinal, has finally begun to burst forth--not in flames, however, but as a magnificent, glowing flower.

My work as an artist began in childhood, continued through college and early marriage. The summer before my second child was born (in August) found me bending, sweating, over 5-foot-square canvases laid out on the floor, creating boldly abstract acrylic paintings. Then life took over, and I put my paints to rest for almost 20 years. Since I have returned to painting, I have had several solo shows as well as having paintings chosen for a number of juried exhibitions. After completing a series of small, highly detailed watercolors set, jewel-like, in a much larger background that is a loose, abstracted version of the central painting, I returned to my interest in the human figure.
