This particular caliper uses the tried and true method of the Vernier scale, which is a system of aligning line segments to determine precise measurement on a mechanical scale. That's probably a lot more information than most would want to know, but it could come in handy at dinner parties.

The history of this particular caliper is what makes it special. It belongs to a good friend of mine who has kept it on his workbench for many decades. It belonged to his father, and will probably be passed down through his family. Most people have heirloom items in their lives, and can appreciate the sentimentality that goes along with such "things".
