Silicon wafers and chips. View of two processed silicon wafers (purple, at top, and orange at centre). The wafers contain dozens of identical microcircuits, which appear as squares. Wafers also contain test sites (not seen) which ensure the accuracy of the manufacturing processes. If the wafers pass all their tests, they will be cut up so that each square microcircuit may be fitted into a holder for use in circuit boards.
