Maynard Mine Trail climbs out of Palm Canyon, south of Palm Springs, California. About half a mile up the trail it flattens out briefly on a bench that affords a great view up the canyon. "View South..." was painted en plein air from that spot...but I kind of messed with the scene when I got back to my studio because I saw some things in it I hadn't seen on location. [Won Second Place in Coachella Valley Watercolor Society's Annual Plein Air Show, 2009]

The lower end of the Maynard Mine Trail has been one of my favorite places to paint in the Indian Canyons--it's pretty steep to lug my kit very far and still have energy to paint! Anyway, after painting about 80% of this on site, I took it back to my studio and started to finish it when I noticed the "faces" peering south. Couldn't resist having a bit of fun with it...
