A scene of a colorful village market in a small town in Mexico in the 1930's. The artist spent a lot of time traveling and painting through Mexico during that time period.
About Maxwell Mandell
Maxwell Mandell (1907-2002) was an artist who is recognized for his work in watercolor and oil, but also known for acrylic, pastel, block prints and lithographs. He studied at the National Academy, Cooper Union and New York University and under noted artist Will Barnet at the Art Students League. In the 1930’s Maxwell studied and painted in Mexico, spending time in Mexico City, Oaxaca, Cuernavaca and Guadalajara. He was heavily influenced by the social upheaval of the times and by his peers in the WPA. He also traveled extensively in the United States and Europe and often sketched and painted scenes from his travels.
