Description
Ballot Box
This ballot box was used in the town of Hart’s location in New Hampshire’s White Mountains from the 1850s to about 1980. This town of 37 residents has along with Dixville Notch, been the first to cast its votes in the nation’s first primary. The tradition of voting at midnight on election day began in Hart’s location in 1948 when almost all residents worked for the railroad and had to be at work before the polls would normally open.
