A pair of New World black vultures hover over a small piece of carrion on a rural roadside in eastern Charlotte County, Florida on June 5, 2016. The new world�black vulture�(coragyps atratus) (not to be confused with the old world black vulture) is a large bird measuring from22" to 29" with a wingspan of between 52" and 66." They range from coast to coast across the southern United States, south through Central and South America to Chile and Argentina.

They are mainly a glossy black witrh a grayish head and neck with few indistinct feathers. They have a short hooked beak, brown eyes and grayish white legs. The base of their primary feathers is white, producing �a white patch on the underside of the wings edge.

Like many of the old generation of photographers, I began with a Kodak box brownie when I was a kid. When I saw what resulted, I was hooked. Having grown up with an aunt who was a professional artist, I was always exposed to the creative arts. As a result, I have always liked to paint. Later I went to the Defense Information School at Ft. Benjamin Harrison in 1966 where I got more intensive training in photography and photojournalism and practiced that craft in Vietnam and the United States. I studied with the Famous Artist’s and Famous Photographer’s Schools to help hone my skills.
