Description
I traveled 2 hours to the middle of nowhere to find this place. Even with modern GPS and Google maps, I still had a difficult time finding this place. To say this is in the middle of nowhere is an understatement. The small town of Cogar Oklahoma was established in 1902 and sits in an unincorporated area in Caddo County. Cogar lost it's post office in 1954 and has been dead ever since.
In 1988, the town made a huge, but short, resurgence in relevance when a scene from the movie Rain Man starring Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman, was filmed here.
Since then, not much has changed. The pumps of the old W.S. Kelly gas station and general store, are still abandoned and waiting for their next customer. Today, Cogar sits pretty much as it has for many years, unused and just a small blip on the radar. It's a 2-way stop sign, one building, no-where-man's land, type of place.
I felt processing the image in this "grungy" or "zombie-like" manner only accentuated the beauty of this desolate and dead old gas station and general store.
