Description
Tom Ricks has lived in North Oakland for the past Ten Years and the Bay Area for the past twenty seven years. He was exposed to Art and Design from earliest years as both his parents were working artists. Artist states: “My earliest photographic memory was around 1965, pouring over Life's Picture History of World War II. I was swept up by the power of the still image and inspired by the courage of the photographers and their ability to capture the essence of a scene in spite of the chaos swirling around them. While I have never had the urge to carry cameras in to battle, I find the ability of the still image to pause time so that the perhaps ordinary details of everyday life can be brought in to focus most enthralling. I am fascinated by accentuating the ordinary, or not so ordinary, in such a way as to reveal it’s extraordinary-ness….” Mr. Ricks studied photography and darkroom technique during college. Building on the darkroom training and aesthetic foundation of his college work, the artist found the less structured approach of self-guided exploration of photography to be more suited to his temperament. These images represent a sampling of his body of work.
