Description
(Copyright Mel Steinhauer all rights reserved) My Army unit patrolled the villages, rivers and rice paddies not far from Saigon, during the late 1960s. Military Working Dogs like this one have served our country in many past wars and they still serve our military today. During the long war in Vietnam, researchers now estimate there were over 4,000 and they were responsible for saving over 10,000 lives. Army Scout Dog Heidi was only 4 years old when this photograph was taken during her second tour of duty. We became close friends very quickly, but I had to leave her there to continue working with a new soldier, when my tour was over. Now it has been many years since then, but I think of her very often still today. I will always remember my best friend Heidi and I will remember that my job was trying to save lives by simply ... Walking The Dog.

I flew helicopters in Nam. On occasion we flew the handlers and dogs. The Scout Dogs loved to fly, and would sometimes look out of the open door in the Huey. This was a nice memory. l/v
