We are extremely pleased! The artwork was exactly what we were looking for and the towel quality is superior. Great birthday gift for my son who couldn’t have been more excited upon opening the gift! This is my second time purchasing from you and I will continue to do so, as well as spread the word. Keep up the great work!!

Pen Sherwood's Amitors artwork goes anywhere with Diana Kisselburg's words! Many years ago, my uncle Thomas (Tom) Phillip Hufford asked me to come up with a word the opposite of predator. Amitor is that word. Ami: Fr. friend, Amigo: Sp. friend, Amity: Eng. harmony, Ami: Formosa, Taiwan. Giraffe: non predatory animal unless young attacked. Butterflies: live, love, laugh, hope. Survive, thrive and inspire others. Pen Sherwood offered to do this Amtor artwork for free sharing the copyright with me for my Amitor concept. Amitor Tom would be so proud. Diana Hays Kisselburg

Artist's Description

Hidden away in remote locations across the Silver State stand beehive-shaped monuments to Nevada's mining past. These conical stone or brick structures were ovens that reduced firewood to charcoal used in smelters to remove precious metals from ore. At the height of their use in the late 1800s, the charcoal ovens contributed to the denuding of forests on mountain ranges in Central and Eastern Nevada. Six huge ovens built at the site in 1873 produced charcoal for smelters processing the ore from the Ward Mining District in the Egan Mountains. Erected by Swiss-Italian craftsmen, the ovens remained in use until about 1879, when the mines began to play out. Woodcutters brought all kinds of wood, even sagebrush, to the ovens, which held 35 cords at a time. Under controlled conditions, the wood burned for five days. The product recovered after a cooling period was nearly pure carbon, lightweight and easily transported to the smelters. The efficiently burning ovens replaced earlier charcoal...

About Robert Bales

I am a retired teacher, coach and athletic director. While my wife, Judy, and I were teaching she had a photo studio, and I had a dark room where I did black and white and color. Some was for the studio while most of it was just a hobby. When we retired in 2000, we sold our house in Eastern Washington and moved onto our boat, Last Class, and our motorhome. We sold Last Class a few years ago and bought a small house in Yuma, Arizona and bought another one in Emmett Idaho. Now we spend the summers in Emmett and the winters in Yuma. Over our 50 years of marriage, we have always had an interest in photography and both of us enjoy taking the photos for this site.
