Description
Restrikes of Plate 95, from the series "Triumph Des Kaiser Maximilian I.", designed for a frieze celebrating the achievements of Emperor Maximilian I. The overall program was developed by Maximilian I and Johannes Stabius in 1512 and recorded by Marx Treitz-Sauerwein; the manuscripts with this text survive at the Nationbibliothek in Vienna. The illustrations, designed between 1516 and 1518, were largely the work of Hans Burgkmair, with contributions by Albrecht Altdorfer, Hans Springinklee, Albrecht Dürer, Leonhard Beck, and Hans Schäufelen. The project was incomplete as of Maximilian's death in 1519, and the first edition was not published until 1526. This edition of restrikes was released as two supplement volumes to the first two volumes of "Jahrbuch der kunsthistorischen Sammlungen des allerho?chsten Kaiserhauses" (1883 and 1884), which published the text with Maximilian's orginal program as dictated to Treitz-Sauerwein. The supplement volumes, published 1883-84 in Vienna by Adolf Holzhausen, include 135 woodcuts from the original blocks in The Albertina.
