Original watercolor painting, 'Vermilion Flycatcher Pair in Quito', by Lynn Cyrus / Cascade Colors. The range of the beautiful, colorful Vermilion Flycatcher is extensive; this bird can be found throughout most of Central and South America, and its northern range extends into the extreme southwestern United States. The male is a brilliant scarlet-red and black in color, with some hints of orange-yellow plumage as well. The female is more subtle, but has varying degrees of rosy-pink tones on her belly, with streaking on her upper chest. These birds never fail to bring delight to the viewer, and I got to watch several while visiting gardens and natural open spaces in Quito and the nearby community of Cumbay, in northern Ecuador.
