A historical illustration of a watermill with reversed Archimedean screw, c 1629, from Branca's Le Machine. Archimedes' screw (also called an Archimedes screw, an Archimedean screw or a screwpump) is a device invented by Archimedes in the 3rd century BC to transfer water from a lower level into higher irrigation ditches.
