Bengal Tiger
Native to Asia, Bengal tigers are one of the largest tiger subspecies, with males weighing nearly 500 pounds. An endangered species, tigers are poached for their hides and bones, which some cultures believe possess medicinal or healing properties in the powdered form.
White tigers are distinct for the normal coloration in that they lack the pheomelanin pigment that in normal tigers produces the orange color. They still produce the pigment, eumelanin, and hence are not considered albino. Compared to normal tigers without the white gene, white tigers tend to be somewhat bigger, both at birth and as fully grown adults.
Did you know that tigers have binocular vision? Tigers have forward facing eyes rather than one on each side of their head. This provides binocular vision because each eye's field of vision overlaps creating a three dimensional image. Binocular vision enables them to accurately assess distances and depth which is extremely useful for maneuvering within their complex environment and stalking prey.
Did you know that tigers can jump forward over 32 feet? The hind legs of the tiger are longer than their front legs, which enable them to leap distances up to 10 meters (32.5 ft).
Fun Fact: Tigers are the only large cat species to have distinctive striping on both their hair and skin, and one of the few that enjoys swimming
