The widow skimmer (Libellula luctuosa) is a large, attractive dragonfly with uniquely patterned wings and can be found perching on vegetation in areas near water and in open country, and meadows.

The female Widow Skimmer's physical appearance is the main reason for the first half of the species' common name, comparing the brown-black patches on their wings to a widow's black veil. In fact, their scientific name luctuosa means sorrowful and mournful.

Dragonflies have excellent eyesight. Their compound eyes have up to 30,000 facets, each of which is a separate light-sensing organ, arranged to give nearly a 360� field of vision.

They are completely harmless - they do not sting or bite and are beneficial in that they help keep the burgeoning insect population in check.

Dragonflies are the world's fastest insects capable of reaching speeds up to 38 mph and studies show that they can travel as much as 85 miles in one day.
