Description
Wild Colonial Spanish Mustangs of Carova walking on the beach. A pelican flies by waves crash in the background.
Wild Colonial Spanish Mustangs of Carova, NC number just 100. DNA testing done by Dr. E. Gus Cothran of Texas A&M in the 90's and 2000's proved that these are in fact Colonial Spanish Mustangs. They swam ashore in the 1700's after ships crashed into our barrier islands. They are one of the oldest and rarest strains left in the world and are listed as a critically endangered/nearly extinct breed. Their numbers were at one time around 6k but the National Park Service put a bounty on them as they were considered a nuisance.
