This is the perfect gift for a retiring teacher friend who taught language arts and is an avid reader. I also happen to know the artist. Perfect! My only criticism is that the wire to hang the picture by was on the opposite way (horizontal) to how it would be hung. I had to change that one thing.

Artist's Description
William Brown Cogswell (1834-1921), US industrialist and chemical engineer. Cogswell studied civil engineering at Rensselaer but left in 1852 without graduating. In 1881, he founded the Solvay Process Company, forming the basis of alkali manufacturing industry in the USA. The Solvay Process is used to produce sodium carbonate from brine and limestone. This brought Cogswell great wealth and he donated money to many charities in the Syracuse area, New York, USA. A tablet recognising his benefactions was placed in the Hospital of the Good Shepherd, a former site of what is now SUNY Upstate Medical University, New York, USA.
