William Osler and Ramsay Wright. Canadian physician William Osler (left, 1849-1919) and Scottish zoologist Robert Ramsay Wright (right, 1852-1933) in 1890 on a trip to Heidelberg, Germany, part of a wider trip to universities in Germany, Switzerland, and Austria, together with a few weeks spent in France and the UK. Osler had recently been appointed physician and first professor of medicine (1889) at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Considered the father of modern medicine, Osler founded the practice of student residency in hospitals. Wright was Professor of Biology at the University of Toronto, Canada. Photographed in 1890.
