William Osler as medical professor, 1870s. Canadian physician William Osler (upper left, 1849-1919) as a professor of medicine at McGill Medical School, Montreal, Canada, with friends and fellow professors Francis John Shepherd (upper right, 1851-1929) and George Ross (lower centre, 1845-1892). Photographed in around 1878. Shepherd and Osler had also been students together. Osler became the first professor of medicine (1889) at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore, USA. In 1905 he became a professor at Oxford University, UK. Considered the father of modern medicine, he founded the practice of student residency in hospitals.
