I live in the north country and like others that live here I can feel the breath of winter in the air often before all the leaves have turned and harvesting is done. It blows cold and chilling on some autumn days and then disappears teasing all of us with another sunny, warm day again. Until the day finally comes when all doubt that winter is coming falls away. The winter winds chill the body and the first snowfall leaves grass barely peeking through and the last of the peppers and tomatoes hanging frozen under suddenly brown-gray leaves. When the moon rises and the wind blows I look out and remember the amazing serene beauty of winter. It makes me smile.
