The Great Horned Owl is very widespread, and can be found across most of the United States, Canada and Mexico. They may be found in marshes,wetlands, forest and desert. The adult Great Horned Owl is a large, powerful and skilled predator, with a length of about 22 inches and a weight of about 3.1 pounds. They are nocturnal, roosting during the day and hunting at night, mostly for small mammals (such as rabbit, possum, and squirrel) and snakes from their perch. They are usually solitary and difficult to spot. The young owlets start off downy and white, and gradually lose all of their down feathers as their flight feathers develop. With a little luck, the fledgling may enjoy a lifespan of 28 years.

This fledgling Great Horned Owlet perched in the rain while cautiously learning to fly was photographed at the Marshlands Conservancy, in Rye, New York, on 6-2-2015. I used a Nikon D800 camera body and a Nikon 300mm f/2.8 VR2 telephoto lens to capture this image.
