Description
Wombat skeleton. Skeleton of the coarse-haired wombat (Vombatus ursinus). This rodent-like marsupial, also known as the common wombat, inhabits the mountainous coastal areas of south-eastern Australia and Tasmania. It has a coarse fur coat and powerful legs and claws for digging. It is a solitary animal. Apart from during the breeding season, it lives alone in a burrow and feeds in a territory that it defends from others by scent-marking and aggressive behaviour. The female has a backwards-pointing pouch in which the young complete their development. A herbivore, the wombat feeds on grasses, roots and fungi which it forages for at night.
