The Woodhouse's Scrub-Jay (Aphelocoma woodhouseii) is a non-migratory species native to western North America, from Oregon and Idaho to northern Mexico. In 2016, the American Ornithologist's Union (AOU) split the previous "Western Scrub-Jay" species into Woodhouse's Scrub-Jay (Aphelocoma woodhouseii) and California Scrub-Jay (Aphelocoma californica). Woodhouse's Scrub-Jay measures about 12 inches in length and about 2.8 ounces in weight. It has a blue head, wings, and tail, a gray-brown back, and grayish abdomen and flanks. The throat is with white streaks with a bluish necklace. Preferred habitat is low scrub, including pinon-juniper forests and oak forests. They feed on small animals, insects, nuts, grain and berries, and steal acorns from Acorn Woodpeckers.

This Woodhouse's Scrub-Jay perched on a rock at Yaki Point, overlooking the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, was photographed 11-7-2016. I used a Nikon D810 camera body and a Nikon 500mm f/4.0E FL ED VR VR2 lens to capture this image.
