A fascinating picture Jane, and an even more fascinating description. People think they will drown if they learn to swim??? That is awful, I wonder how many lives that costs each year ?? That is one of those very disturbing facts that sticks in the mind for a long time.

Jane McGowan replied:

Thanks David. It is a terrible far I agree totally. However on the flip side is you travel upland and stop in Bansang which is on the river Gambia, they can just about all swim. This is even with crocodiles. They are unafraid of them a's they are small and only eat fish.I am not sure I would swim there!

Artist's Description

On a beach in The Gambia. These great pirogues are normally from Ghana and the fishermen travel the sea making a stop in The Gambia. Many people drown as their parents breed a fear into them that they will drown if they learn to swim. The current around here are unforgiving and you have to be careful where you choose to swim.

About Jane McGowan

Jane McGowan

Hi! I was born in England, but brought up in Southern Africa, spending time in Zambia, Zimbabwe (what was then Rhodesia), Botswana and South Africa. We moved to Australia briefly for 8 months and then back to the UK. I work full time, and spend all my holidays travelling. I do not take beach holidays laid on a sunbed, nor sleep in luxurious hotels. I like to experience how people in other countries live and eat. Have used long drop toilets, and eaten rats, worms, and frogs amongst other things! I try and capture the world and beauty around us. I want people who have everything, and still complain, to see how lucky they are, but are the poorer for not being happy. Having the latest gadget does not make them as happy as a...
