Description
The mighty Zambezi river at Kazangkulu is greeted by the Chobe river as they both flow towards the Victoria Falls, a few miles to the east of here. This marks the place where the four countries of Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe all meet. The biggest game in the region use this area for fresh drinking water and roadsigns warn of this danger. Grasses are called hippo grass and elephant grass, laced with a variety of wet area flora.
Here a perfect African sky reaches out into the distance towards the Atlantic Ocean. Intermittent rain patches made conditions for painting near perfect. Although the constant threat of heavier thunderous downpour hung in the sky, I was lucky on this occasion. The only nearby shelter was a line of freight trucks that waited here to cross into Zambia in the north and Botswana, Zimbabwe and South Africa to the south. These truck drivers waited on average for about three days to cross the great river on a ferry that achieved the impossible with every single trip.
Painting here over a few days was some entertainment for them and I made many friends at this crossing. Hippos were a real danger here as well as large crocodile that eyed me all throughout the painting of this canvas. I eyeballed them back and they knew that art came before all else. Very cultivated, these animals were.
