Description
A man dressed in a Zangarron custom (L) chases people to whip them while the young men of the village dance, during the San Esteban festivity in the north western Spanish village of Sanzoles del Vino, Zamora province, on December 26, 2009. The pagan festival of Zangarron opens the winter mascarades' season in Zamora province, and it is celebrated to help the young men to become adults. Zangarron gives chase to children and the elderly people of the town as his mission is to protect the local eighteen years old boys from the people, so they can dance. Zangarron wears a black leather mask, colourful clothes and a stick with pig's bladders. Bladders represent fertility and the cowbells tied to his back frighten away the evil spirits.
