Dead Sea Scrolls Discovery

Lauded as the greatest archaeological discovery of the 20th century, the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered in this cave and ten others at Qumran, Israel, located near the northwest shoreline of the Dead Sea, the lowest land area on Earth at approximately 1,400 feet (427 meters) below sea level.

Pictured is legendary Cave No. 4 where, in 1952, 75% of all artifacts from the 11 Qumran caves were discovered, according to the Israeli Antiquities Authority. These consisted of portions of Hebrew Scriptures (the forerunner of several books featured in the Christian Old Testament), works on Jewish law, prayers, tefillin and mezuzot.
